Ville de Fribourg: Using Neapoljs since 2010

Since 2010, the City of Freiburg has deployed several applications using Neapoljs for AIMS (Autodesk Infrastructure MapServer). Over the years, a felt 1000 layers were added and not optimized, which made the entire application slow. In summer 2016, Fribourg decided to migrate the applications to MAP+ and UMN MapServer. An immense performance gain was achieved:

  • Official survey data as tiles instead of estimated 50 individual layers
  • All raster layers as "on-the-fly" calculated tiles. Fribourg shows 120 (!) historical maps from 1874 on
  • POIs as SVG GeoJSON Layer: massively faster and unmatched sharpness of the images
  • Migration of vector data to faster databases
  • Last not least: the excellent performance of UMN MapServer

TYDAC migrates data and representation definitions

The data has been migrated from SDF to SQLite and some to PostGIS. This with the help of FME with not too much workload. The larger workload was to take over the whole representation definitions, which we underestimated ... Most layers were quickly done. But there were some pièces de resistance, especially the traffic layers! This is the longest MapServer configuration file we ever created: over 5'000 lines. In addition, the creation and definition of the symbols (almost everything SVG). The symbol file is also over 5'000 lines long. Without an efficient use of FME that would hardly have been possible. All the fun can be enjoyed here.

However, during the migration, a WOW effect came on: this is a gold mine of data! So far, we did not have a city that provides such a comprehensive range of data on the Internet. Chapeau, Friborg!

The migrated application of the city now serves as a template for further applications on the Internet and intranet. The city will migrate the apps independently.
