Climate change

Climate change

Terrain shifts have always existed, and are increasing with climate change. Well-known examples are:

Brienz/Brinzauls

The village has been constantly on the move: The entire terrace has been sliding downhill probably since the last ice age. In the past 100 years, Brienz/Brinzauls moved a few centimeters per year. In the last twenty years, however, the sliding has accelerated considerably: Currently, the movement is about one meter per year! (Source: Info Brienzer Rutsch, municipality of Albula/Alvra).

Bondo Landslide

The Bondo landslide occurred on the northern flank of Piz Cengalo. Following previous rockfalls and mudslides in 2011 and 2012, the largest landslide in Graubünden in decades occurred on August 23, 2017, claiming eight lives.

Mountain railroads: Measuring and evaluating displacements is mandatory

Mountain railroads are obliged to periodically check critical infrastructures such as reservoirs and pylons for terrain shifts with precise measurements. With Summit GIS, TYDAC AG, together with Menegon Friberg Vermessung AG, has developed a MAP+ based application for the infrastructure of the mountain railroads. This includes, among other things, a module for analyzing the measurements. This includes:

  • Easy import of the measurement series
  • During import the data is checked for errors
  • Representation with scale magnification from 1 to 2'000
  • Export of displacements to csv
  • Detailed analysis as PDF report
