FME - Data Modeling and Transformation

FME is an extremely powerful and flexible tool (E for engine) for professional and efficient translation and processing of spatial data. FME supports over 350 different GIS and CAD data formats (vector and raster), web services, databases (spatial and non-spatial) and 3D data. The objects(F for features) are transferred into a neutral, internal format and can thus be processed format-independently(M for manipulation). Subsequently, they can be output to any target format and read directly by the corresponding GIS or CAD software.

FME Desktop consists of several independent components. The two main components are:

  • Workbench: authoring tool for the definition of translation processes
  • Data Inspector: View and inspect data in all supported formats

FME Workbench

FME Workbench is the Authoring Tool of FME. It can be used to define complex translation and processing procedures. The simple and intuitive handling makes it possible to define data flows between different source and target formats in a very short time. By adding so-called "transformers", individual or entire groups of objects can be manipulated. In addition, attributes can be added and external data sources can be joined. With over 500 functions, Workbench is an extremely powerful tool.

FME Data Inspector

The FME Data Inspector is used to visualize spatial and non-spatial data in all supported formats (raster and vector). It can be used to view data before, during and after processing. For example, the location of each coordinate of an object can be displayed. Application: Error analysis, display of unknown data or data structures, visual step-by-step review of translation processes, etc.
